Frequently asked questions
If your question isn't here, call us at (540) 547-1798, we're happy to talk it through.
Booking a ride
How far in advance should I book?
At least 48 hours ahead when you can. That gives us the best chance of matching your appointment time exactly.
We'll always try to accommodate short-notice and same-day requests depending on availability, but for those, please call us rather than using the online form.
Is submitting the online form the same as booking a ride?
No. The form sends us a request. Your ride isn't scheduled until we call you back to confirm the details, the vehicle, and how the trip will be paid for.
If your appointment is today or tomorrow, please call instead so we can confirm on the spot.
Can I set up recurring rides?
Yes, and we encourage it for dialysis, therapy, and any other standing appointment. Tell us the days and times and we'll hold the same slot each week so you don't have to call every time.
Can someone else book a ride for me?
Absolutely! Most of our rides are arranged by a family member, caregiver, social worker, or discharge planner. Just make sure the request includes the passenger's name and a phone number we can reach on the day of the trip.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Call us as early as you can. We ask for at least 24 hours' notice so we can offer the slot to someone else. Late cancellations may be subject to a fee, which we'll always tell you about up front.
On the day of your ride
What time will the driver arrive?
We give you a pickup window rather than an exact minute, and we build in enough time to get you to check-in without rushing. If your driver is running behind for any reason, we call you. We won't leave you wondering.
Can a family member or caregiver ride along?
Yes. One companion rides at no additional charge. Feel free to let us know when you book and tell us if the companion also uses a mobility device.
What if my appointment runs longer than expected?
It happens constantly, and it's not a problem. Call us when you're finished and we'll get a driver back to you. You will not be stranded because a doctor ran late.
Do you help me into the building?
Yes. Door-through-door assistance is included on every trip: from your front door to the vehicle, and from the vehicle into the building and to the check-in desk if you need it.
Drivers do not provide medical care, lift passengers who can't bear weight without proper equipment, or stay with you during the appointment.
Can we stop at the pharmacy on the way home?
Yes. Just be sure to mention it when you book so we can allow time for it. Unplanned stops depend on the driver's schedule that day.
Cost & coverage
How much does a ride cost?
It depends on distance, level of service (ambulatory vs. wheelchair), and whether the trip is one-way or round-trip. We give you the full price when we confirm your booking before the ride happens, never after.
Do you accept Medicaid or insurance?
Some plans cover non-emergency medical transportation, usually through a transportation broker rather than the plan directly. Call us with your plan information and we'll tell you honestly whether we can bill it or whether the trip would be private pay.
Can a facility be billed directly?
Yes. Hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living communities, group homes, and home health agencies can set up an account and be invoiced. Contact us to get that started.
How do I pay?
We accept major credit and debit cards. You'll receive a receipt after every completed trip.
Service & eligibility
Are you an ambulance service?
No. We provide non-emergency medical transportation only. We do not carry medical equipment, provide clinical care, or respond to emergencies. If someone is having a medical emergency, call 911.
Do you transport passengers in wheelchairs?
Yes. Our wheelchair-accessible vehicles use a lift, and you stay in your own chair for the ride while secured by a four-point system. No transfer is required.
Do you offer stretcher transport?
Yes. Our stretcher vehicles are equipped and secured for passengers who need to remain lying down for the trip. Let us know when you book so we can send the right vehicle. For bariatric transport, call us and we'll confirm whether we can accommodate the trip or refer you to a provider who can.
What areas do you serve?
We serve Virginia. Long-distance and out-of-area trips are possible with advance notice. Please call us with the details and we'll let you know.
Do you transport on weekends or evenings?
We operate every day throughout the week, weekends included if necessary. Be sure to let us know your schedule when you book.
Can you transport someone with dementia or memory loss?
Often, yes. Tell us up front so we can plan the trip properly. Depending on the situation we may ask that a caregiver ride along, which is always welcome at no extra cost.
1st Class Medical Transport Services does not provide emergency response or ambulance transport.
Still have a question?
Call us and ask. We'd rather answer it now than have you guess.
